We observe National I Love My Feet Day annually on August 17th. It’s a time to appreciate just how valuable our feet are. After all, our feet are our primary mode of transportation. Let’s look at how you can show your feet some love with these easy tips.

Get Good Shoes! First, think your new shoes will eventually stretch out. Look for shoes that fit you currently and try them on first. Check the space at the end of the shoe. While standing, ensure there is half an inch, about the width of your finger, between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Make sure they aren’t too tight. Calluses may form in areas where the shoe presses against the skin, especially on the bottom of the foot over any bony areas.

Get Good Socks! Wearing moisture-wicking socks can help keep your feet safe, comfortable, cool, and dry. Try to find socks that aren’t too rough or tight. If your foot is sitting in a soggy sock, this could breed bacteria and put you at risk of developing athlete’s foot or other fungal infections.

Keep Your Feet Clean! Every day you should wash, dry, and check your feet. Make sure you get in between your toes. Use soap and water and dry thoroughly. Check for redness, swelling, cuts, pus, splinters, or blisters while you do so. If you see anything suspicious, contact an experienced podiatrist right away.
