Summer is almost over with the official start of fall on September 22nd. But did you know the entire month of September is dedicated to Falls Prevention Awareness Month? It’s the perfect time to look at how we can prevent those terrible falls that cause us so much trouble.

Prevention Tips

Although accidental falls are more common in people over 65, it can happen to anyone. It’s always best to contact a podiatrist who can answer your specific foot health needs but here are some general tips to help reduce the risk of taking a fall and injuring yourself:

  • Wear safe shoes. Shoes with rubber soles are less likely to slip. If you’re exercising or hiking try athletic shoes or boots. The lower the heel the safer it is. Also, avoid heels that are too narrow.
  • Try foot exercises. Building strength in your feet and toes can help reduce the risk of falling. Stretching also helps.
  • Keep the floor clear of hazards and objects.
  • Use a night light. Often trips and falls occur at night when trying to get to the bathroom in the dark.
  • Avoid walking barefoot outside.
  • Seniors may want to use a cane for stability when walking.

Finally, if you have any foot-related issues make sure to see a doctor and have them examined. Bunions, warts, or foot pain in general, can increase the chances of slipping and taking a fall.
