Growing Pains” or Something More?
A Parent’s Checklist for Kids’ Foot Health
As a parent, you watch every step your child takes, from their first wobbly walk to their winning soccer goal. But when they complain of foot pain, it’s easy to dismiss it as “growing pains” or just a rough day at practice.
While kids are resilient, their feet are still under construction. Ignoring subtle signs of structural issues now can lead to chronic pain in their teenage and adult years.
At Atlantic Foot & Ankle Specialists, we believe early intervention is the key to a lifetime of healthy mobility. Use this checklist to determine if your child needs a professional evaluation.
The “Red Flag” Checklist: When to Call Us
If you check more than one box below, it’s time to schedule a visit.
1. The “Tired Legs” Complaint
- [ ] Does your child ask to be carried frequently, even after short walks?
- [ ] Do they complain of “tired legs” or shin splints at night?
The Verdict: This is often a sign of pathological flat feet. Their muscles are working overtime to stabilize a collapsing arch, leading to rapid fatigue.
2. The “Clumsy” Walker
- [ ] Does your child trip and fall often?
- [ ] Do their feet point inward (pigeon-toed) or outward (duck-footed) when they run?
The Verdict: In-toeing or out-toeing can relate to rotational issues in the leg bones. While some outgrow it, persistent tripping requires evaluation to prevent hip and knee strain.
3. The “Heel Limp” (After Sports)
- [ ] Does your child limp after soccer or basketball practice?
- [ ] Do they complain of heel pain that gets better with rest?
The Verdict: This is the classic sign of Sever’s Disease (Calcaneal Apophysitis), an inflammation of the heel’s growth plate. It is not just growing pains, but it is treatable with orthotics and rest.
4. Visible Changes
- [ ] Do you see a hard bump on the side of their big toe (Juvenile Bunion)?
- [ ] Are their toes curling or overlapping?
- [ ] Is there redness or swelling around a toenail(Ingrown Nail)?
The Verdict: Structural deformities like bunions can start in childhood. Correcting them early with orthotics can slow their progression and prevent surgery later.
Why “Wait and See” is Risky
Many well-meaning friends might say, “They’ll grow out of it.” But waiting often means allowing a child to develop poor gait habits that lock in problems for life.
- Treatment is often non-invasive: For kids, we rely heavily on Custom Orthotics, physical therapy, and proper shoe gear to guide growth. Surgery is a last resort.
