ESWT / Shockwave
Safe, Effective In Office Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
What is ESWT?
E.S.W.T. stands for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy.
- Extracorporeal – outside of the body
- Shock Wave – the pressure (sound) waves produced by the ESWT machine
- Therapy – or treatment
This non-invasive treatment is similar to lipotripsy which is used to treat kidney stones. In podiatry ESWT is most commonly used to treat tendon related pathologies, such as Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendonitis. Studies have shown that ESWT can be effective in the treatment of heel spurs and even to aid in the healing of diabetic wounds.
How does ESWT work?
ESWT increases blood flow and metabolic activity to the affected tendon which accelerates the bodies own natural healing process. It is non-invasive and an excellent alternative to surgical treatments for tendon issues. Patients may continue their everyday activities immediately after treatments.
Individual treatment sessions last roughly 10 minutes in duration. The treatment is administered on a weekly basis for three weeks, followed by a week in which an ultrasound of the tendon is taken to monitor progess.
ESWT is a cash pay (we also accept VISA, Mastercard, Discover, American Express and Checks) service. We do not submit ESWT treatments to insurance.
